WXCI is a student-run college radio station broadcasting 24/7 from the Midtown Campus of Western Connecticut State University (Western) in Danbury, Connecticut, USA.

WXCI began in 1973.  We currently broadcast at 3,000 watts and our transmitter is located at the Westside Campus of WestConn.

You can hear a wide range of genres on WXCI. We play everything: hip-hop, metal, indie rock, americana, classic rock, jazz, punk, reggae, techno, folk, dance, experimental, industrial, hardcore, alt-rock, avant-garde, power-pop, funk, electroclash, country, ambient, ska, grindcore, bluegrass, electronica, psychadelic, British invasion, elevator music, black metal, drum and bass, PLUS, the all-inclusive, “and more”.

We also feature weekly topical talk shows including the Sports Jam and WestConn Happenings.  Also, on the weekends, we broadcast WCSU sports events, including football, basketball and hockey games.

WXCI, 91.7 FM, is the student-run radio station of Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, Connecticut.

WXCI broadcasts to Connecticut and New York at 3,000 watts with a stereo transmitter on WCSU’s Westside Campus and it’s main studios on WCSU’s Midtown Campus. WXCI-FM also streams its broadcasts on the Web, via www.WXCI.org.

WXCI-FM obtained its FCC license to operate on February 28, 1973. Initially transmitting at 10 watts of power, WXCI upgraded to 760 watts in 1978. In 1982, WXCI was one of the first FM stations to focus on alternative rock, a format now common among US college radio stations. As one of a handful of stations playing alternative rock in the US in the early 1980s, WXCI helped popularize new bands such as REM, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello,U2, Culture Club, Duran Duran, and Black Flag.
